Our single species cover crops are pure quality seed of the individual plant types. We have various single species that can fit into any good farming practice and geography within the upper Midwest and the western regions. Every species we offer at Prairie Creek Seed has a unique set of characteristics that can improve any type of production from beef cattle to cash crops. We are here to help you select the right one.
Annual Ryegrass establishes rapidly, which gives high productivity in the planting season. Best suited for grazing, silage, and is great in a cover crop blend. Annual ryegrass increases organic matter and has dense fibrous root mass that can grow 36 inches into the soil. This is a very easy forage to handle and as a cover crop due to winter kill.
Hunter is a hybrid developed by crossing turnips with related Asiatic leaf vegetables of the same species. The resulting quick-growing, leafy turnip, with minimal bulb development, is best suited to multiple grazings for summer and early fall feed requirements. This hybrid is excellent quality forage, providing high liveweight gains for finishing stock to target weight in summer/fall.
Winfred has good frost tolerance and retains leaf and stem quality in frosty or cold conditions. This feature may extend grazing times from early summer into early winter. Once established, Winfred is tolerant of dry conditions. This product becomes a flexible multifaceted tool ideal for summer, fall and winter feeding. Winfred is supported by an aggressive root system. This makes it an excellent cover crop option in soil improvement systems incorporating grazing.
Graza’s palatability, yield and quality under grazing compares favorably with the typically used leafy turnips. This radish has a remarkable digestible dry matter and metabolizable energy level, higher than corn or sorghums. Graza is a cost effective cultivar to grow, easy to sow and quick to germinate. It also does not need special tillage or planting equipment as it’s easy to drill into stubble.
Forage Rape and Turnip Cross
T-Raptor is a cross between a forage rape and forage turnip. This gives this hybrid brassica a fast establishing habit while putting down a tap root. The lack of producing a bulb reduces the choking risks associated with a true turnip. Either as a grazing forage or simply a additional cover crop T-Raptor will establish quickly and offer soil health benefits.
Pick Axe is Prairie Creek Seed’s own premium cover crop radish. The root has been seen to grow over 30 inches, which prevents soil compaction and builds up soil biomass. Pick Axe is known for its weed suppress due to its rapid growth. As this brassica continues to grow, it takes up excess nutrients in the soil and stores it for the next cash crop to utilize. Pick Axe is very easy to manage due to its high chances of winter kill and rapid break down time.
Barkant is an improved forage turnip that combines higher leaf production and a purple tankard root. Barkant produces high yields with good top growth. Barkant is a diploid variety, with good resistance to bolting and very good disease resistance. The high sugar content provides winter hardiness and improved palatability. Excellent for stockpiling and strip grazing.
